2017 Hair Trends: The Return of Crimping

We love it when retro hairstyles make a comeback, so imagine our excitement when we saw crimped hair all over the SS17 catwalks. It might be as 90s as chokers and flatforms, but crimping is set to be a huge style for 2017 – and it’s actually super wearable. Find out how to get the look with our top tips for crimping your hair…

2016 Ariana Fringe

Tip #1 – Crimp selectively

We know this style is totally 90s-inspired, but bring the look up-to-date by avoiding crimping all of your hair. Instead, experiment with different sections for a dual texture effect that’s 100% 2017. Steal Ariana Grande’s style with a crimped ponytail (above), or channel the models on the Ashley Williams runway with crimped hair and contrasting straight fringes (below) .

Tip #2 – Use protection

From heat, that is. Crimping irons today are definitely kinder to hair than the originals of the 1990s, but it’s still important to use a good heat defence spray, especially if your hair is already weaker from being coloured. Make sure you wait until your hair is completely dry before your press the iron down, and don’t keep the plates on one section of hair for too long.

Tip #3 – Keep the texture

This look is all about volume and texture, so you’re going to need a product that will help lock this in. We love Fudge’s Salt Spray for adding a raw texture to hair – simply spritz this through your crimped hair once it’s dry and scrunch for unbeatable shape.

Tip #4 – Go heat-free

If you don’t like the thought of using heated crimpers, you can get the same look in a way that’s much kinder to your hair. Simply braid your hair while it’s damp from the shower and leave overnight. The smaller and tighter the braid, the more defined the crimp will be.

Tip #5 – Get creative

Crimped hair should be fun, so don’t be afraid to play around with different styles. Add extra interest to up-dos by crimping your hair before putting it in a braid or bun, or leave your top layers straight for an instant volume boost.
