Nothing gets us excited for festival season quite like the two weekends of Coachella. Okay, so our summer festivals might not be quite as glam as California’s celeb-filled party in the desert, but we can still dress as if they are. The fashion, hair and beauty looks from Coachella are therefore always our main form of festival #inspo, and this year’s no different. So what trends were all over the ‘gram, and which are we definitely taking with us this summer?
They were one of the most iconic styles of last summer, so it’s little surprise that braids are set to still be big news on this year’s festival circuit. Well, duh – not only do they instantly add Kardashian vibes to any outfit, but they’re also super-practical. Whether you’re hiding greasy roots or protecting your locks from a rainy downpour (two things we doubt the babes at Coachella need to worry about), plaits are as handy at a British festival as a rain mac.
This year, it seems like double braids are still the most popular choice, though there are some switch-ups from last year’s uniform boxer braids. A lot of fashionistas opted for looser, braided pigtails embellished with hair accessories – we’re loving Vanessa Hudgens’ boho braids with that cute butterfly adornment! Others added some interest to their braids by interweaving brightly coloured string or hair extensions with their own hair. Add hoops or feathers for extra Coachella points!
‘Blorange’ has emerged as one of the must-have shades of the season, and a festival’s the perfect time to get experimental with your colour. One of the great things about blorange – or ‘blonde orange’ – is that it can be as intense or mild as you like. Go ultra-fiery with a red-to-blorange ombre like the sassy Coachella-goer above, or add a peachy effect with a semi-permanent colour such as Fudge’s Paintbox in ‘Goldfinger’.

Forget floral crowns – this year, it’s all about embellishing the skin. Glitter, sequins and jewels were seen all over Coachella, and were used above eyebrows, across foreheads and even dotted over noses and cheeks as super-glam faux freckles! You can either go bold and beautiful with colourful jewels, or add some subtle shimmer with finely-milled gold and silver glitters.
Festival makeup has traditionally been v. pastel-heavy, but the Coachella baes added a touch of luxe this year with metallic finger and toenails. From classic gold and silver shades to iridescent blues and greens, if it was high-shine, it was in.
As we’ve mentioned, greasy roots are practically guaranteed at a festival. But you don’t have to let them ruin your look – instead, just mask them! Glitter partings were one of our favourite 2016 festival trends, and it looks like they’re sticking around for this year too. As well as glitter, girls at Coachella also transformed their roots with brightly coloured powders and semi-permanent sprays. Blondes looked amazing with baby pink or fuschia roots, while brunettes slayed with aqua and turquoise blues.
