When it comes to prestigious events in the fashion calendar, few come much bigger than the annual Met Gala Ball. Hosting the best, brightest and most loved celebrities and fashion folk of the moment, the event sees all coming spectacularly dressed to impress.
Vogue editor and hostess Anna Wintour’s guest list didn’t disappoint where the style inspiration was concerned, as everyone from Beyonce and Jay-Z to David and Victoria Beckham graced the red carpet on the night. We asked our Edge team members to tell us about their favourite red carpet hairstyles, what makes them work and how you can get the trends for yourself.
Making a rare red carpet appearance as a couple, Jay-Z and Beyoncé didn’t disappoint, keeping us rapt with their graceful entrance. Of course, our eyes were firmly on Beyoncé and her chameleon style. Edge member Shahnaz loved the look’s understated beauty, “She looked effortlessly sexy in a see through number, and I loved the sleek side-part. There was too much going on with the dress to have her much loved curls, so she kept it simple and balanced with her look.”
Bradley Byrnes loved it too, and says it’s easy to achieve at home, “Mrs Carter is always a show stopper, and this hair is so easy to recreate you can be too. Simply make the hair glossy by using am oil before you blowdry, then apply serum throughout the hair to give ultra shine. Comb hair back sleekly making sure you place your parting in, then secure pony at the low base of the nape. Create a bun by wrapping the hair around tight and securing with pins. Easy, catwalk inspired, and can be worn daytime or evening.”
One of the more offbeat looks of the night came from quirky fashion lover Lily Allen (above), pairing a complex updo with her 60s winged eyeliner to create a striking and eclectic mix of fashion influences. With her high gloss, dark locks, her hair was made of large intertwined braids piled high on the head. Receiving mixed reviews on the night, Lily’s look had a couture edge that kept us all on our toes. What do you make of it?
Edith Simon loved Blake Lively’s look, “She looks fantastic in this nude shade, mixing a simple shade with a high impact beauty look and truly Hollywood glam hair!”
Loving how on trend this hair is for Summer parties, Bradley’s a fan: “Big for Spring/Summer, this look it can be worn ultra sleek or really textured, whatever your style. Simply curl all the hair in the same direction, then gently use a paddle brush with a spritz of hairspray on it to bind all the curls together. This will create that gorgeous waved effect. For extra definition, apply a shine mist in the creases of the wave – a great secret trick to catch the light like a VIP! If you need some support for the heavier front section, give a little gentle backcombing for support, and finish the whole look with strong but flexible hair spray.”
