Every stylist knows that you need accessories to finish off an outfit – and this season, the same is true for our hair. Various hair accessories were seen all over the catwalks at both SS16 and AW 16/17 fashion week shows, so this is a trend that’s going to stick around for months to come. Get on board now and win some serious style points by dressing your hair as well as your body.
Dramatic headpieces were a key look for plenty of designers at Milan Fashion Week, and the above from Antonio Marras’ AW 16/17 show gives us an indication of what styles we’ll be sporting next autumn. For this season though, take inspiration from FKA Twigs at the Met Gala and keep things more simple with chains and delicate metal detailing (attachment to nose ring only necessary for the very brave).
Ornate jewllery isn’t just for the body anymore; delicate pearls or bold jewelled pieces now take pride of place nestled in the hair. The key to nailing the trend this season is to avoid making it look too pretty. This isn’t supposed to be perfect, prom-style hair – instead, follow Alexander McQueen’s lead and pull bits of hair loose for a messy, morning-after effect.
Tapping into this season’s prairie trend, head scarves have made a big comeback this season. Gucci models walked the runway in Milan with simple neutral colours, while celebrities including Christina Aguilera are favouring the retro bandana style. Whatever style you go for or however you choose to tie your headscarf, one thing will be the same – roots and greasy hair won’t be seen! We think that’s reason enough to get on board with this trend, don’t you?
Traditionally seen as something to lend support to a hairdo, hair grips are now a key part of the style itself. Both Fendi and Mac Mara sent their models down the runways with visible grips for their SS16 shows, and Ciara littered her gorgeous grey style with them at the Met Gala. To create this look yourself, choose hair grips that match your own hair and add them in a row down your ponytail, or create a bold look with contrasting coloured grips added randomly throughout your style.
You might not have worn one since your school days, but if you want to be on trend this summer then it’s time to get yourself a headband. As seen at the Dolce & Gabbana show at MFW and on a host of celebs including Nicole Kidman, they add an interesting edge to classic up dos. Rather than fabric, go for a metal headband that can sit on your hairstyle easily. In terms of the decoration on the headband, anything goes – from pretty floral details to Nicole’s Roman-inspired discs. We might have to draw the line at your name written in glitter though (boo).
