Here’s how to create a voluminous blow dry at home

Blow dry finished look

Whether you have long hair or short hair, the possibilities for styling it are endless. Yet it’s still easy to get caught in the same old rut of just throwing your hair up into a messy ponytail or topknot. There’s a whole world of hairstyles to explore out there – from the comfort of your home – and one of our faves has *got* to be the salon-style blow out.

We’re all getting to that stage now of seriously missing our salon blow dries, so this handy guide will talk you through how to achieve the look at home. The key to a salon-style blow dry is creating volume and bounce, which might be easier on some hair types than others. This is especially true if you’re blessed with a thick head of hair. But that doesn’t mean you can’t recreate the look for pretty much every hair type – even on thin, fine hair.

So, grab your hairdryer, barrel brush and have your blow-dry products at the ready… Because hun, you’re about to bring home salon expertise and create the perfect blow dry.

Blow dry: Step 1

Gently rub a 10p coin amount of Moroccanoil Treatment (or a 5p coin amount for thin hair) between your in palms and evenly distribute into wet hair. Concentrate application on the mid lengths and ends, gently detangling as you go along with your fingers.

Spray a layer of ghd Heat Protect Spray throughout your whole hair. Prep hair for a voluminous boost by evenly spraying Paul Mitchell Extra Body Boost in the roots.

Blow dry: Step 3

Blast hair with a hairdryer until the hair is 80 per cent dry, then create a center parting with a tail comb.

Blow dry: Step 4

Using a medium sized radial brush start barrel drying the hair from the face in small sections.

Blow dry: Step 5

Continue this method throughout the whole side of your head, using the cool air option to cool hair down before releasing the brush, this will help fix the volume and bounce and in place. If you don’t have a cool option on your hairdryer, just hold the brush in place for a few extra seconds allowing the hair to cool down naturally before releasing.

Blow dry: Step 6

Repeat this method on the opposite side, wrapping the hair around the brush and drying away from the face. Continue to heat and cool down to hold the shape.

Blow dry: Step 7

Gently brush through the hair. This will fuse and smoothen the blowout, whilst maintaining bounce and volume. We achieved our look using the ghd Oval Dressing Brush.

Fix the shape with a few spritz of TIGI Bed Head’s Masterpiece Massive Shine Hairspray and you’re all set!
