So you’ve received your exam results (congrats btw!), got in to the Uni you wanted (congrats again!) and panic bought a new wardrobe on ASOS for freshers week. Thought you were done? Wrong! Paying particular attention to your hair is *just* as important and attention-grabbing as the clothes you wear. Sure, heading off to Uni in 2020 might feel a ~little~ different to being a fresher in previous years. But that’s not to say you still can’t look your best. Just know that wearing face masks and lathering on the hand sanitiser should in no way (we feel) compromise your style. Whether your lessons are staggered, virtual or a combination of both, we’ve got the must-have hair products you’ll need to keep your hair looking FRESH in our ultimate Freshers Hair Survival Guide.
First things first though, if you’re actually physically moving out to live nearer to campus, you’ll first need to figure out how much space you’ll have. There’s no point packing your whole beauty stash if you’ve not got the storage space. Equally, you might find that you’ve tonnes of space, even more than you do now – which is great. But it still doesn’t mean you need to be lugging boxes of products that you’re never going to get round to using. So, the key to packing for university is ‘essentials-only’ which is why we’ve included the only hair products you’ll need to get you through.
For those staying at home, funnily enough the same rules apply: keep what your essentials and throw out stuff that’s no good!
Don’t forget to read to the end to find out how you can WIN your very own freshers survival kit!

All of the virtual nights out, open air cinemas and 9am video lectures will throw your hair wash routine right out of sync. The EIMI Volume Dry Me dry shampoo is a freshers week essential when it comes to keeping your hair fresh as a daisy. Chances are you’ll be spending more time battling with your morning alarm than washing your hair as you settle into Uni life, and waking up before noon again (so long lockdown) so saving yourself precious time in the morning is definitely worth it. And, there’s no need to stress about skipping a hair wash day, as it can actually do you some good. Over-washing strips your hair of its natural oils, so giving it a break is always a good option. But if you do feel a little ick for not washing your hair, EIMI’s Volume Dry Me absorbs any excess oil giving you the feeling and appearance of healthy, clean hair. Not only is this a dry shampoo but it’s also a volume styling spray – we LOVE a 2-in-1! No excess oil and hair with body and bounce? Yes please! You’ll be ready to run out of the door in no time.
Shampoo and Conditioner Duos
Relying on mum and dad to pick you up your trusty shampoo and conditioner is a thing of the past now that you’re a campus goer – or a virtual campus goer. Just make sure you’re buying the right type for your hair. Our top tip when it comes to choosing a shampoo and conditioner is to pick a brand that’s backed by the experts. Here at Supercuts HQ, we swear by the TIGI Bed Head Tween Duos as they’re super affordable and you get a shedload of product (750ml to be precise!). Now that’s bound to last you a few months, right? Personally, we love the Tigi Bed Head Urban Antidotes Re-Energize Tween Duo as it works wonders to inject shine, re-hydrate and nourish strands from root to tip. Hair will look glossy and feel revitalised too – so much so that your locks will look radiant even during your video classes! They’re also available in other ranges: Colour Goddess, Recovery, Re-Energise, Resurrection and Dumb Blonde – so there really is a range for everyone, happy (uni) days
Freshers week can be a very hectic (but equally exciting) time, what with all the rushing around you’ll be doing, albeit for some this might be a virtual dash to the laptop to attend your lecture. Running from lectures straight to a student union get together is most likely going to be a common occurrence, albeit socially-distanced, so you’re going to want to lock your hairstyle in place, all day long. Our stylists recommend TIGI Bed Head Maxxed Out Massive Hold Hairspray as it secures any style with a long-lasting hold. Whether you’re creating a super sleek look or a big, bouncy blow dry – always finish it with this signature hairspray, and it’ll last you all day and night. And don’t worry, it doesn’t leave that horrible crunchy feeling on your hair either, making it super easy to brush through after a night out (or in). A good hair spray is flexible and allows for natural movement in your hair, whilst securing your overall style. For that reason, the TIGI Bed Head Maxxed Out Massive Hold Hairspray gets a big thumbs up from us.
All of those attempted YouTube hair tutorials are bound to take their toll on your hair eventually and we guarantee that at some point, you’ll be dying for a night in with your roomies – which at this point is more likely to be Mum and Dad. What better combo to go along with a Netflix and chill evening than a hair mask?
Quick quesch: does your mum always go on at you about drinking enough water? Well, that logic of staying hydrated is actually crucial for your hair too. Another multi-tasking wonder product from Wella Professionals is the Elements Renewing Mask. This is literally the perfect treatment for those with dry, frizzy and colour treated hair. It’s a deeply moisturising treatment, that helps to add softness and shine while helping to detangle and improve manageability of hair. It’s also packed with UV protector qualities to help shield your strands from sun damage, so it’s a win, win!
