Hot Hair Trends for Spring/Summer 2017

Spring is FINALLY nearly here, and it’s not just our wardrobes that need updating after this long winter. A new season is the perfect time to switch up our hair ready for later nights, holidays and festival season. But which styles should we be going for this SS17? Read on to find out…

The Cuts

2016 was all about the lob, but to be chic and on fleek for 2017 you should think about taking your hair even shorter. The SS17 runways were rife with extreme chin-skimming bobs, curled inwards for a ’60s-inspired bowl-cut finish. If you don’t want to lose your length, you can go for the chop via your fringe instead. Think super short and uneven – kind of reminiscent of that time you went wild with the scissors aged 4. It’s fashionable now and your mum won’t mind, we promise.

For men, the must-have cuts this spring/summer involve a bit more length. As we explained in our 2017 Men’s Hair Guide, one of the key trends is a retro mid-length cut that’s left unstyled with natural flicks and curls. For guys looking for something a bit edgier, the undercut is back, but with an update. Shaved back and sides contrast with plenty of texture and movement on top for a look that makes a statement but is still easy to maintain.

The Colours

The biggest buzzword in hair this season? Blorange. A hybrid of blonde and orange, this peachy shade is an update on last year’s rose gold hue that we all had a crush on. Suited to both warm and cool skin tones as long as you pick the right shade, we see this as being one of the most popular shades at this summer’s festivals. Whether you go for a wash of apricot or a deeper burnt sienna, you’ll be bang on trend this year.

Grey’s also making a reappearance this SS17, but this time it’s for the guys! With celebs including Ryan Reynolds embracing their natural greys, there’s never been a better time to become a silver fox. If you’re not at the grey stage naturally yet, then pop into your local salon to achieve the look with a semi-permanent toner.

And for the ladies who still want to rock a pale blonde? This season it’s all about metallic, icy shades that reflect the light. Both of these shades also look fierce with the must-have wet-look texture of the season, so stock up on those serums and waxes!

The Styles

We’ve already mentioned our love for this year’s crimped hair, but what other women’s styles will we be loving this summer? First up, we’re SO excited that our favourite trend of last year isn’t going anywhere – yep, it’s still all about braids. For 2017 though, it’s less about those Kardashian-style Dutch braids and more about small, cornrow-inspired braids.

If you need a style that takes a bit less skill to create, then the ‘hun’ is 100% the spring hairtstyle for you. The ‘half-bun’ will be perfect if you’re at a festival as it’s a great way to add volume to second-day hair. And for men? SS17 sees the return of a style you probably loved as a teen: spikes are back! This time around though, keep them matte (sorry to those hoping for a return of their wet-look gel) and without too much structure for windswept, beachy vibe.
